1ºJustification for rates? Most professors aren’t professors. If a professor teaches the class the TA’s clean-up for the teaching methods employed in the classroom or hall which are sub par. Less than 50% of what is being taught is being consumed by the student. The system is broke. Mortgage payment for the majority of persons attending any university. FAFSA and Pell are so outdated. The formula is broken. If you have multiple kids attending college the formula should be to break it down fairly for all families or individuals. Debt just builds. It’s accepted by the colleges who could care less and by the governmental agencies granting let’s say it loans at outrageous payment amounts. Honestly what are you paying for. At public universities you are still sleeping in outdated rooms from before 1960, no AC etc. So what are you paying for. A piece of paper that upon getting your first job, your employer will retrain you to meet real world expectations.
Then there are the athletes. Enrich the few in D1 and D2 while D3 pay without consequence as coaches use the student athlete to enrich their programs. NCAA protections.
The rich men and women on the Hill need to understand the problem but they don’t care about student debt or family debt because they are there to enrich themselves and their pocket books.
The solution is a lot simpler if they grant you x you only pay x% and it’s a tax write off each year. As far as I see it FAFSA just tells you how deficient in funds you or your family is in being able to pay.

2ºI know someone very intelligent that wanted to go to a PUBLIC university. He was even accepted into it but unfortunately could not afford to go. But yet these schools spend a TON of money on new buildings, new this, new that, tons of money into athletics, and tenured faculty staff salaries that well exceed 100k, 200k, 300k+. The universities get away with it because they know the government will give these young kids student loans. These are KIDS not even old enough to legally drink, but get to sign paperwork to put them into perpetual debt for the rest of their lives!!!!!!
3ºAt $360,000 if the parents are paying for it outright, they would be better off putting it in the Vanguard total stock market index fund which averages at least 10% a year. That’s an average over 52 years.
There are some years that are up and there are some years that are down. It’s an average.
And from 18 years of age age to 70 years of age that would be worth  $51 million and accounting for an average of 3.8% inflation per year for 52 years that would be a buying power of over $7 million today.
It’s not costing $360,000 to go to college. It’s costing 7 million.

If you’d like to change gears into another topic that entails bills then sure. All bills have that, that’s government. “Pork” added to bills are nothing new and happens on the right as well. That is not a left thing or a right, it’s happening egregiously on both sides. All bills are different and catering to different people on both sides of the aisle. So, what specific “pork” are you talking about. Please be specific.

5ºJuliann Michelle That is exactly right. I attended a top university in DC in the 1970s. Tuition was $2,500/semester. With scholarships, Pell grants, and my parents’ help, I graduated without debt. I’ve been able to leverage my education in management-level positions in global corporations. We were a lower middle-class family. But I was able to pull myself up. There’s little hope of doing so these days for someone from a similar background. What a waste of human capital and talent for the U.S. We will all continue to pay the price in terms of stymied economic growth and overall well-being.
