1ºI watched the eclipse with an MD and an optometrist. We saw a mid 30s guy and his partner at the park with us looking at the eclipse. The dude was just staring nonstop at the sun, no glasses. We had extra, so the optometrist took a pair and went up to him and asked him if he needed any, and he said he had a pair. She told him she was an optometrist and warned him of the risk and he just ignored her and kept staring. The dude definitely did permant damage to his vision.
Ugh. I guess this is Darwin in action, but it isn't going to kill him. He is at high risk for a lifelong disability that is going to ruin his quality of life and become a burden on those around him.
I bet yesterday was the start of a nightmare for eyecare professionals. There were an inordinate number of ignorant folk online in the days before, pretty much all conservative/MAGA types, trying to say that you didn't need eclipse glasses and that they were a scam, that there was no risk.
2ºThere have been so many car crashes today where I live in Northern Virginia and I’m guessing it’s because of the eclipse as people are driving blind. I’ve seen things like cars and buildings and cars off the road and ditches. You would think there was a terrible ice storm but it’s 65° and partly cloudy. It’s obviously their eyesight as they did not heed the warnings. Nor did I and I’m one of those cars that went off the road and I sadly hit someone. It’s been considered a medical emergency since I did not know I was blind and so I will not be charged the officer told me. Sadly the person I hit (teenager walking to school) has passed away. I plan to send a condolence card to the family. But I have some good news……. I get to retire on disability now and I’m only 42. Freedom !!!!!!!!
3ºSummer Knight oh you're good then. The article was about damage from looking directly at the sun without protection. Which unfortunately, too many people did. I experienced this first hand yesterday; I was at an eclipse event with an MD and an optometrist, and the guy in front of us was staring at the sun unprotected for long periods of time. The optometrist approached him with a pair of eclipse glasses and he said he had some, and she said he should wear them or he's going to get permanent damage and he just waved her off. That dude is going to be in really bad shape based on how long he was staring at it before totality. As professionals, both of my friends were deeply concerned about what the dude was doing to himself but they could do it say anything more about it.
