Tennessee legislature passes bill banning marriages between first cousins

A bill prohibiting marriage between first cousins is headed to the Tennessee governor’s desk after the state house voted overwhelmingly to pass the measure Thursday.

There are 24 States where cousins can still legally marry, most of them in the Southeast quarter of the United States, but a few out west too. In the 1700s and 1800s, when people lived in very small towns and farms that were few and far between, it didn't take long before everyone in an area was related to each other to some degree, so allowing marriage between cousins was a necessity. There were only 102 people on the Mayflower. There are 35 million descendants of those 102 people. As we are recently finding out, very old laws don't get removed from the books that easily
