Bette Harbin - Ma’am, black and Latino families still lag behind whites and Asians in the middle and upper middle class (by 20%, according to Pew Research) and schools are funded based on taxes. If people can afford to live in more affluent areas, they can afford to go to better schools - better elementary schools for foundation and better high schools that provide more AP, AICE, IB and DE classes (this difference between a 4.0 and a 5.0 - and yes, all of these classes are on a 5.0 scale, so kids that have access to these will have MUCH higher GPA’s). More affluent kids families can also afford ACT/SAT prep classes and that can make the different to get in to a better college. It seems all sweet to say we are color blind, but when we do that we are not acknowledging that we still have a ways to go where *everyone* has a truly equal opportunity. Just saying. I’d love to be able to say everyone is equal, and that’s the goal, but I know it’s not the case, so that’s hurtful to these kids with less opportunities (and now even more so). It will be a shame to see black and Latino college rates go down because of affirmative action being rescinded. I’m fairly certain it will and then we’ll be even *less* equal because college graduates do make more money overall - 84% higher. Man, it’s not going to be good.

Roz Russell if he was born into slavery it wasn't here in America so not America's fault. I actually did mention those situations if you had bothered to read everything I said. I also said there was government sponsored prejudice and segregation. Again if you had bothered to read you'd have seen that. None of that has affected you and you did not experience it so therefor you have no right to any reparations due to it. If it was the next generation? Sure. But yours? Nah. Yeah it exists but not to the level most people claim it does. Mainly in small towns by People. There is no government sponsored racism in this country. None. Also welcome to Facebook be prepared for people to comment on your public posts on a public page. If you don't like what's said you have 3 options. One. Ignore it. 2 block me and show you lack the ability to handle any discussion that challenges your view. Or 3 not comment publicly on public pages.

Teresa Bowman Well i don’t see you any differently. I think you are the one seeking for an excuse to say you are different or you have such a lack of confidence that you don’t see yourself as the same as me or others.

Since i don’t know you i can’t say “oh you’re better than me on this or you’re worse than me on that” but we are all good and bad at some stuff.. we got different skills.. we will never be the same.. jn fact each person is different from the other..
so when it comes to an scholarship why do you think you should have more privileges over me or anyone else?

Look we are NOT perfect. As humans we will never be the best at everything.. we all have different skills, ideas, etc.
Some are born tall.. I didn’t. Is that a disadvantage? Depends on what.. a small person is easier to hide or to hold.. but at the same time being small has also disadvantages..
the fact that you solely focus on gender and race makes me think you fell into the narrative of “feeling a victim of a system that’s against you” which it’s in your mind since we ALL have disadvantages in life.. wether it’s height, weight, other physical characteristics, skills, etc.

I wish i was better at math but i was better at literature or science.. is it my fault? NO im just different and so is everyone.

Which means we should focus on protecting The INDIVIDUAL, the individual is the smallest minority.

And not giving special treatment to certain groups..
i consider your idea of thinking very misogynistic against women.

Women and Men have the same rights. Don’t see any legislature against women.. Do YOU? Tell me which please..

Maybe in the past.. that wasn’t the case but that time is far gone. I don’t see any situation in which women are in disadvantage…

According to progressives the fact that i am gay makes me even more of a “victim” than women.. is that true? not at all. At least not in my experience. We are all the same.

Erika Burkle - Unfortunately, that’s not true. We can afford to live in an affluent county, we can afford to get my kid paid ACT prep, our school has tons of AP classes, our county is predominantly white. Our neighboring county and the people that live there not only do not have the options my family has, but also face a much higher crime rate and other issues that are not the kids fault who live there. Not equal. And now they are not only getting rid of anything to help get them into college, but also gutting the DEI programs. If we see the number of black students in our universities plummet, it will be shame on all of the people who think “it’s America, we’re all equal.” We should be, but we’re still not. Young kids lose ground, high school kids without the foundation can’t catch up and I can tell you that college has only gotten more competitive, and the percentage of middle to upper class black and latino Americans still lags behind white and Asian Americans by at least 20% (according to Pew Research). There is still a racial gap. Where you can afford to live makes a significant difference in schools and the significant difference in schools makes the chances of a kid getting into college, and especially the better colleges, less accessible without the education provided at those higher funded schools (funded by local taxes) with more AP, AICE, DE and IB classes. Just saying.

Deborah A Jones not only did he tell the HBCU presidents that they did not need to keep asking for renewal of the funds he made it permanent. Then Biden won and changed the funding structure so they got less becausehe divided the money to other colleges and institutions. Nice try though.

"It’s worth noting that Biden’s budget for fiscal year 2024 proposes $1.04 billion in funding for HBCUs, tribal colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions, as well as $30 million “to provide two years of subsidized tuition for students from families earning less than $125,000” and who are enrolled in four-year HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions."

Rachel Longton representation in leadership matters. That’s why the Supreme Court wouldn’t touch the military academy’s attempts at racially diverse recruitment (fratricide in Vietnam was traced to a lack of officers that understood or related to those they led in battle).

In any case, I think Duke has a right to revoke those scholarships. Black students who can’t afford the tuition but have the intellect and achievements should simply take their talents to a university that does (HBCU?).

What’s more, in the age of NIML, black athletes should do the same if they have any sense. You’re not gonna make any money at a college who’s alumni don’t make an effort to bring students, athletes and future leaders who look like them there.

Tim Fink First of all, the default rate on student loans at Duke and the top 50 schools is negligible. Duke helps to fund their attendees schooling with its large endowment, or their parents pay the full $90,000 a year for them. And yes, what the government and Duke think a student can pay is radically different than what a student and parents think and believe they should pay. Most people don't understand which schools are the offenders; it's not the very selective schools. For example, did you know that a computer engineer major at Stanford can earn $35,000 - $40,000 during the summer between junior and senior year? That covers a lot of tuition. So, where did those kids who are defaulting attend college? Two of the top default schools are Alaska Christian College and Arkansas Baptist College. And it's highly likely they didn't graduate. Biden's last forgiveness program was for students who paid all of their principle and were still paying on interest years later (and who had at least 10 years of never missing one payment).

Matthew Pye That’s not a fair way to judge student value. Plenty of low income families can’t afford to send their child to the extra training, tutors, and specialized studying it takes to make top scores on the standardized tests. Sometimes smart kids have to work extra jobs or spend their evenings taking care of their siblings, and don’t have the extra energy and time to get homework done or spend hours on the essays most scholarships require.

In a perfect world, “merit” would be a good way to measure a student’s preclusion to work hard and succeed, but that just is not the reality. Privilege skews opportunity in favor of those with privilege.

10ºDerrick Flowers there are grants and scholarships specifically for students with disabilities with that being said however there aren’t many accommodations in college for students who are disabled.

You might be able to get a scribe, extra time on a test, dictation, audio recordings of lectures but there are no IEPs or 504 plans in college setting.

As for paying for school? I would highly recommend that if you aren’t a good fit for college do not attend. The real world isn’t the bubble that kids are used to in high school where things just work out…as we know things don’t simply work out because you want them to in real life. It honestly depends on how disabled they are and if they can cut it intellectually.

One of my good friends from college has cerebral palsy and despite his physical disability he is extremely bright and dedicated to his work…he was a great fit for college. Many people aren’t and we have to stop lying to them as a society.
