Mother of Chicago child with measles: It was ‘one of the scarier moments of my life’ | CNN

“His eyes looked super empty,” Coletti said, describing her son’s eyes, glassy from fever. Vincent’s eyes were also red and he had a rash. He’d tested positive for Covid-19 at the time, but Chicago mom of two Jessica Coletti felt like something else seemed off.

BK Johns Are illegals refusing to vaccinate? Or maybe they're coming from unstable countries where they didn't have access to vaccines, or they came without vaccine records since they are, ya know, migrants seeking asylum?

The problem is that people like you are also angry when migrants are given medical care.... which would be when and how it would be determined someone is sick and when they'd be vaccinated. And even if someone is vaccinated, it takes time for the vaccine to reach full efficacy and we know you and your crew certainly don't want the migrants housed anywhere other than mass tents.

This is the problem with the right wing platform.. it's all about what you guys don't like and don't want but it ignores reality. You don't want us involved in other countries affairs, so people migrate here. You don't want us to follow our current laws, which require allowing people to seek asylum but you also don't want to pass a law making it harder to claim asylum. You don't want money spent on the migrants but you also don't want them spreading disease or committing crime. Even if I agreed with every thing you guys don't want, there has to be some logical alternative offered up that is lawful and effective and I'm still waiting for that.

Andi Louise they had an outbreak of measles in Chicago at a shelter for immigrants. The state came in and vaccinated everyone at that shelter. One child died. So maybe you just don't know everything. As far as being forced, there were many that were required to get the covid vaccine or they lost their job. That includes military, federal workers, except postal workers, health care workers, many state workers and several companies that thought they were going to be mandated. Biden tried to force private companies into covid shots. He was overruled by the courts. So good try but your not being truthful.

Kat Hernan CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Department of Public Health warned Friday evening that there have been dozens of measles cases in the city in recent weeks – and not all of them have been connected to migrant shelters like some of the most well-documented ones early on. “New arrivals didn’t bring measles to Chicago. It was circulating here, and they are vulnerable to it because many come from countries where they didn’t receive the vaccinations we in the United States do, and they’re living in congregate settings where it can spread more easily,” Ige said. “We’re now doing the hard work to contain that spread.”

I guess in all these states it was the illegals fault huh.

CDC updates this page weekly on Fridays.

Measles cases in 2024
As of April 18, 2024, a total of 125 measles cases were reported by 18 jurisdictions: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Andi Louise "it hasn't happened" is a blatantly irresponsible statement, one that cannot, by documented means, be verified, due solely to their undocumented status!

No outbreak at the border? Once entered, they don't stay at the border. They're displaced into the U.S. interior, primarily cities.

If you're willing to admit that American travelers can and do contract diseases abroad and then spread once stateside, you should acknowledge the high probability that these same nations -- with lax or no immunization schedules, have citizens crossing the U.S. Southern border. 149 countries identified to-date.

Anything less is disingenuous, propagandized, bunk.

Just be honest. It's okay.

Heather Michalski Kame, read the article. The child wasn't exposed to illegal immigrants. We have plenty of native-born anti-vaxxers (including a Presidential candidate) who do not understand that the measles virus is the most contagious virus in the world, that measles can kill, and that people who catch measles often lose the immunity to other diseases--immunity that they have because of past infection and/or vaccination. The MMR vaccine, which wasn't developed until I was 16, also confers immunity to rubella. Early in my teaching career, I taught a student who was legally blind, hearing impaired, learning disabled, and physically stunted and weak because he had been exposed to rubella prenatally. He pre-deceased me. I simply cannot fathom why anyone would reject vaccination for his or her children (not that the mom in the article did).

Nice try, Chris Sobik but your new link doesn't support your claim. Did you miss this part also in the link you posed half a dozen times? "City health officials haven't yet established the outbreak's origin. But officials said the cases aren't linked to international travel, including by migrants who recently crossed the southern U.S. border before arriving at the shelter."

“This did not come with those newly arrived in the city, either,” Dr. Olusimbo 'Simbo' Ige, the city commissioner of public health, said in a briefing Wednesday afternoon. “This means that measles is circulating in our city. And it’s why we are putting the call out for everyone who is at risk to protect themselves now.”

Rachael Dobšovičová - Interesting.
I googled the issue to see why our second shot is given when it is.
We have an Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices which gives the recommendations for the first and second dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
The second shot may be given sooner under special circumstances (e.g., traveling abroad, poor response as evidenced by titer levels).
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices continuously reviews the history of measles, its characteristics, and its evolving past and current immunization policies, and focus on the original intent of the recommended schedule and presenting a case in which deviating from current practice could be justified.

I said “much of it is.” I didn’t say that’s all.

If a vaccinated American has contact with one of these people from a foreign country who is infected, that American is very unlikely to become infected and thus able to spread the disease. The vaccine is 97% effective at preventing infection.

If an unvaccinated American has contact with an infected person, that unvaccinated American is very likely to be infected and then to spread the disease among the rest of the unvaccinated. The measles virus is highly infectious and stays in the air for an extended period of time, so close contact with an infected person isn’t necessary to spread the virus.

Yes, measles was considered to be eradicated in the U.S. until too many people believed the anti-vax lies and refused to vaccinate their children. Those children are very susceptible to infection to a lot of diseases, and likely to spread those diseases in schools, daycares, at parties, movies, swimming pools, parks, at stores, and family gatherings.

Jen King there is a study out of Japan that is showing an increase in cancer after each booster. I personally know people that got Covid less than a month after getting vaccinated and having worse symptoms then I had unvaxed. They were also younger then myself. I am seeing some people getting Covid multiple times even though they had all their shots. I've only had covid once. Those shot are a therapy not a vaccine. I have never had any disease that I've been vaccinated for. It was clear very early on that they weren't going to prevent it and very early on there were people still dieing from covid. It was experimental and shouldn't have been pushed on the young until they studied it more thoroughly.

10ºKat Hernan thing is the child had mesales along with covid when he got to emergency room mother brought him in very sick. All the info is in the article and has a primary source mom seems like you just want to blame the migrants. Again mom did say she has no idea where he cut it but people that travel out of the United States can also be at the supermarket park etc in Chicago..My area is filled with people that travel to asia Europe and even Africa as they have family in these places .Someone shared the article on this thread with you with CDC info in it . Again if you are vaccinated you have nothing to worry about and I know I am and so are my adult children so I have no concerns even though I work in elementary school .
