How the Black Opry is helping elevate artists of color in country music | CNN

The organization billed as the “home for Black artists, fans and industry professionals working in country, Americana, blues, and folk music” is getting more attention these days since Beyoncé dropped her country-inspired “Act II: Cowboy Carter"

Leland Gradney How do you feel about all of the democrats protesting around the country chanting things like ‘we are Hamas’? If you compared the number of democrats around the country yelling blatant antisemitic chants in just the last week to the number of morons at a unite the right rally yelling ‘Jews will not replace us’… what do you think you would find?
I miss the days when we could have a reasonable discussion about differences of opinion on policy but, sadly, conservatives have been misbranded as racist evil xenophobic…. (Hence my reaction to ‘trumpsters’)
The fact is democrats are the ones who owned bought and sold slaves. They went to war to fight to keep slaves against conservatives. Democrats in Congress fought against women’s right to vote and against the civil rights act. Democrats founded the KKK. The list is long but the democrats were brilliant. They were patient and used propaganda so effectively that they have convinced millions that the opposite was true. Another humorous opinion is the parties miraculously ‘switched sides’.
Many have and will vote for Trump (including me) simply because we agree with the policies and we truly believe the alternative will continue to damage our country. We aren’t interested in being best friends with our president, we just want someone capable of doing the job.
So, when you comment using words like ‘trumpsters’, please understand you are joining the propaganda push having nothing to do with opinions on policies that only serve to insult half of the people in this country.
Again, peace

Terrie Bergeron The real lesson here is that not everything has to be about our experience. We won’t have experienced a lot of what other folks have, especially those who are people of color. It’s okay to just listen to their experience and to understand that just because that hasn’t been your experience or you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean their experience wasn’t real or valid. In this conversation, it’s not really about your experience. And that’s okay. We can share our experiences later or elsewhere, if desired. But it’s very beneficial to enter these conversations with the baseline attitude that it’s just not about you, and that’s okay. Listen to understand rather than to respond. Sometimes the whole point of the conversation is JUST for you to listen.

Gabrielle Alyse yes, you are correct. I did not know of their struggle in the industry so I could not speak about that which I have no knowledge. I have not heard Darius Rucker's comments. Nor have I heard of Freddie Fender. That is why I did not comment about those. I only commented about my experiences and personal knowledge. I was grouped into a category and that person said that as part of that category I was taught to exclude black people from country music. I stated that as a life long listener and singer of country music, I was NEVER taught that. After hearing that about them, I am looking up information now to be more informed about their particular struggles.

Terrie Bergeron That’s the best thing to do! Sounds like she didn’t lump you in, but told you that the issue lies within people in the industry and white fans that do perpetuate the stigma that country only belongs to white artists and that anyone else isn’t a “real” country artist. There are plenty of people espousing that belief commenting on this article. One guy just told me black people had no hand in the creation of country music and that couldn’t be further from the truth… then he started rambling about “illegals flooding black communities,” making his biases that much more obvious. It was weird.
Anyway, I hope you learn something new today! Have a good one and thanks for the civil discourse.

Never forget Biden administration saw 40 fake babies, panicked while asleep but didn’t see ~14500 real children killed with a live broadcast. It will bring a calamity. Shame on Jill being a teacher and never condemned rampant killing of children and bombing of schools, colleges and university and hospitals. Oppressor’s are bound to be punished one war or the other
GAZA HAS BECOME A GRAVEYARD FOR CHILDREN - UN CHIEF.
The chilling video has the occupation force saying “what babies! There is no babies! We killed all the babies!”
Banning tik tok won’t save ya… It’s all out.. free Palestine

Maureen W-Wright there's quite a few. As it relates to my initial comment most are directed at me. I actually don't mind. What bothers me is those who said one thing, and obviously turned off notifications on the off chance I'd ruffle a feather or two. You don't have to use actual racial slurs to be racist. Funny thing is that I'm not saying anybody on this thread is racist; but there are quite a few who are obviously naive. And yes, I'm well aware of racists who are black. I literally just dealt with one in one of my groups who basically called me a sellout for being Lutheran and attending a church that is 99.99% lily white. Racism doesn't bother me. It's the denial, and subsequent apology out of some sort of expediency only to do it again that does.

Why can't any country music artist be a part of the Opry? Why does there need to be a race specific country opry? I just will never understand the perpetual cycle of racism that is exacerbated for absolutely no reason. The music is what makes it country (or not), not the color of the singer's skin. My husband started listening to country music when he heard Darius Rucker's songs. He is a terrific country artist. Let people sing, keep race out of it. If you don't like their version of country music or whatever genre of music they are singing, change the station, wait 4 minutes and go back. Done deal. No harm, no foul. Get over the racism! Love everyone!

Sivad SauDade Beyonce is not a country music singer. Her first song released might be a hit but the rest is just for show. Country music singers do not sing naked or nearly naked. Just another musician trying to bastardize anothe genre of music . Just cant wait to see how many cowboy hats are sold because of her songs. By the way if you want to hear Black country music that is real check out Chapel Hart. Three black girls from Poplarville Ms. that are rocking the hell out of country. They are not getting the attention they deserve because they are not a Beyonce. They are real country.

10ºTerrie Bergeron would it be called that for a nurturing environment because the Grande Ole Opry excluded them or bullied them because of their skin color? Would James Aldean be considered not country if his town wasn't so small? Would Morgan Waller not be considered country if he wasn't drunk when he used the n-word or threw a chair off of a roof? The issue isn't so black and white now is it? So, why would is it called The White Grande Ole Opry? Btw, The original Grande Ole Opry was all inclusive, do you know who the very first performer was? But it is no longer welcoming now is it?
