They were people who would be willing to give their lives to protect her.They were too inferior to eat from food she help prepare so she felt sorry for them that she left and was homeless, moving from one boyfriend to another and she suffered greatly throughout her life.
In her funeral her maternal uncle's family dressed up in traditionally mourning attire to show their love and great humility for her death. Taylor also in the same song Fortnight sarcastically ridiculed the love story between an American girl from New York who was said to be wife of captain of an American ship Portland that was attacked and killed with most of the crew in Tonga in 1802 after my paternal 5th great granduncle, warlord and warrior mistaken it for the British navy slave ship the Duke of Portland.
Her so called "escaped" two years later in another American ship a whaling ship which the captain and most crew were also killed probably for killing whales in the Pacific. She traveled to Australia, Hawaii, America and South America and had children overseas but she went all the way back to Tonga to be with him but unfortunately her warlord husband was killed some months after she arrived back by my maternal 5th great grandfather when he attack one of his forts. Some survivors of attacked ships in Tonga refuse to go back to their country or as one survivor of an attacked British ship said to have ultimately comit suicide after he returned to England because he missed Tonga badly. In all attacked ships in Tonga no women, children or teenagers, elderly people or handicapped were harmed. They all were treated well and respectfully.
As Captain James Cooked was among the first Europeans to meet and stayed among the Tongan people which he visited 3 times and last time stayed in Tonga for 3 months 20 years earlier and he and his crew were built their own house by the Tongans.
So the New York girl's so called escape from Tonga was probably to see the world but she returned to Tonga because she was loved with her children and treated as aristocrat there. And Tonga was not a primitive society it was an ancient empire with monuments and architecture that was unique.
