For decades, gun violence has taken a disproportionate and grueling toll on Black communities—leading to tens of thousands of gun deaths and hundreds of thousands of gun injuries. The impact of gun violence on this community is particularly devastating for young Black men. In 2022, one in every 67 Black men ages 18 to 24 in Philadelphia were killed or injured in gun homicides or shootings.1 In Rochester, New York, it was one in 50 young Black men.2 In Cincinnati, it was one in 44 young Black men.3
The vast majority of shootings in these cities—and in similar communities across the country—are perpetrated by a very small number of people.4 But the impacts of this violence are felt across entire communities, contributing to generations of trauma and collective grief that have disproportionately affected Black people.
Importantly, gun violence in Black communities is a direct cause and consequence of the systematic, structural disadvantaging of these populations. Research shows that high rates of gun violence seen today have been forged by past and present racial discrimination, including historic racial segregation and disinvestment.5 As gun violence plagues these communities, it leads to diminished economic opportunities and a lack of investment, creating a vicious cycle.6 This reality provides not only a strong impetus for action, but also a reminder that solutions to this problem must address the underlying inequalities driving gun violence in Black communities.

Trends in Gun Violence
Gun violence touches every community and every racial group in the United States, but none more so than Black communities. In fact, Black Americans die from gun violence at 2.7 times the rate of white Americans.7 On average, more than 13,300 Black people die from gun violence each year.8
Alarmingly, nearly all forms of gun violence have been rising among Black Americans. Firearm homicides rose 23% from 2019 to 2023.9 Firearm suicide and unintentional shooting deaths have also shown troubling increases over this same time period (50% and 11%).10 Police shooting deaths have remained at high levels over the time period.11
Firearm Homicide
The vast majority of gun deaths among Black Americans are gun homicides, and Black Americans make up the majority of gun homicide victims in the US. In fact, 82% of all gun deaths among Black Americans are gun homicides.12 Despite the fact that Black boys and men account for just 6% of the total population, they comprise more than half of all gun homicide victims.13
The disparities in Black and white homicide rates are particularly stark in large cities and counties. Research suggests that roughly half of all gun homicides take place in just 127 cities,14 driving the elevated rates of homicides in these geographies. In the nation’s 20 largest counties, Black men ages 15 to 24 die from gun homicides at a rate nearly 22 times that of white residents.15 This disparity means that while five out of every 100,000 young white men in these counties die from gun homicides, nearly eleven in every 10,000 young Black men are killed in such incidents.16

3ºLi But what are we to do with all these guns we own now. Of course we can use them. That’s what they are for. BTW, how do you figure we have more than 700 million guns in private hands if we are not going to use them? That makes no sense. If they were not to be used to kill people we wouldn’t have them. In 1786 a different time than now, everyone was given the right as part of the home militia at the time, to own and possess a limitless number of guns. Even though only single shot and time consuming to reload existed. Now guns contain 10-20 and more shots and fire them rapidly. We have no rules or even recommendations for storing guns in the home safely. The NRA and mfgs of guns prefer no regulations on guns. Kind of crazy, I know.
4ºDaniel Sebastian you are totally clueless! I arrested probably a couple thousand people for DWI several of them killed people. Do you want to ban cars on the road and hold Ford Chevrolet and all these dealerships responsible because a car killed someone or the freaking driver that’s the same thing with guns a gun didn’t crawl up on the roof and shoot people by itself. A gun can be used to protect you from idiots like this and from all kinds of other problems that you’re having and so you cannot blame it on the guns go back to your little closet in your safe place and I’m pretty sure if somebody’s breaking into your house you’re gonna call someone with a gun or the way y’all are now you might want to call a social worker to try to talk a gunman into lay his gun down or his knife as you’ve seen. I think the FBI is a little out over their ski’s again showing bulletproof casings with the word “ anti ice” on them, we have seen this type of shit before where the FBI did everything in their power to convince us that Kirk’s shooter could not possibly be MAGA, oh and then there was the photo of Kilmer Abrego’s with “ MS 13 “ photo shopped on his hand, Marjorie Taylor Greene even held it up on the floor of Congress, these people will stop at nothing .

7ºCatherine Olivia Apondi if you’re referring to people with a brain that’s pro second amendment yes, you would be correct! Last time I checked and all the homicides that I’ve worked when I went to the scene with people with their heads blown off or bullets in them, the gun didn’t do the killing by itself There was another thug at the other end of it, pulling the trigger!I worked a ton of fatality accidents. I was a reconstruction officer, and I didn’t hear anybody wanting to BAN cars or trucks because somebody which there was up to 25 or 30,000 people a year killed by drunk drivers and I don’t know of anybody that’s wanting to BAN automobiles and also if I remember correctly a lunatic just got through killing an innocent girl on a train, slashing her up with a knife, and I haven’t seen people wanting to BAN knives yet so yeah I don’t know what your point is!
8ºDemocrats need to stop fueling the political fire they’ve ignited with their relentless false claims about the enforcement of our immigration laws by ICE, Border Patrol, and other federal agencies. Law enforcement has shown remarkable restraint in the face of interference while carrying out their lawful duties. Perhaps it’s time to enforce compliance consistently,no more endless patience, it’s time to drop the hammer.
For some reason, the left seems driven to oppose the right even on matters of mutual benefit, such as upholding basic laws. I believe it stems from a combination of insecurity and a relentless quest for power and control. They fear that doing the right thing under a right-leaning administration could set a precedent, diminishing their influence.

This is Jimmy Kimmel can be an example to help with, for once just once, have him in the Democrats tell their supporters to stop attacking ICE agents. There are humans, they have families, they have jobs to do. They have laws to follow!
Comedians, Hollywood, Democrats are giving the impression that all ICE AGENTS and ALL law-enforcement are conservatives. They are assuming!! They are both or neither! To the Democrats, you need to tell your supporters to stop just stop!!
Democrats need to stop demonizing ICE or LAW ENFORCEMENT! Let them do their jobs. Violence is wrong!!

You will see, everyone is a human. Skin color is just a trait of humanity. We are all a unique people who comes with similar and different traits of human beings. You're unique, everyone is unique. Nobody is being replaced and nobody is replaceable. We are just here for a bit of time on earth. So let's not hurt one another over different traits that are determined by our ancestors. Everyone is beautiful. So please, there is no need to look at anyone as less because of a "different race" anymore, because there is only 1 race of human beings on this planet: Homo Sapien.
